Technological developments have always inspired visions of the future. The introduction of the first automated looms in the 1770s prompted both utopian visions of wide and accesible employment and a dystopia of the complete replacement of humans with these early machines.  In turn, visions of the future have inspired technological developments. Information technology pioneers like Vannevar Bush, Ted Nelson and Richard Stallman were guided by ideas of a participatory, decentralized or simplified future when they imagined and designed inf0rmation technology

Even though technology seems to be neutral or apolitical, these visions often have a decidedly political edge. A recent example is Julien Assange’s political vision of a radical cryptoanarchism, which guides his actions as head of Wikileaks.

In class we will examine the cultural dimensions of technological innovation. Moreover, we will trace the politics that shape these innovations. Although we will begin with reading from the early 20th century, we will be focusing on Post-WWII texts such as Vannevar Bush’s As We May Think, Marshall McLuhan’s writing, William Gibson’s Neuromancer and the Manifesto of Philosophic Condition by Anonymous.

That is all I have to say right now.

Man kann die Berichterstattung der Medien als eigenes Ereignis betrachten, dessen Darstellungsformen nicht so sehr an das Erdbeben gebunden sind, sondern vielmehr an inhärente Gesetze, zum Beispiel in diesem Fall an eine narrative Struktur: Hoffnung im Angesicht der totalen Zerstörung.

Ähnlich – bzw. viel ausführlicher und besser – argumentiert Guido Isekenmeier in seinem Buch “The Medium is the Witness: Zur Ereignis-Darstellung in Medientexten – Entwurf einer Theorie des Medienereignisses und der Analyse der Fernsehnachrichten vom Irak-Krieg.”

Meine Rezension des Textes “Eine gelungene Untersuchung realistischer Darstellungsverfahren im Medienereignis anhand der Fernsehnachrichten über den Irakkrieg” ist seit gestern auf IASL Online zu lesen.

Julia Sommerhäuser published an article called Warblogs – Tagebücher zum Irakkrieg in the collection of articles Zerstörter Irak – Zukunft des Irak, a collection of articles discussing diverse issues related to Irak. She also published an online article on the same issues.

Ms. Sommerhäuser takes a look at a number of warblogs, ranging from Where is Raed? to Albritton to Instapundit and compares them to regular media outlets and the way they present the war.  She comes to the conclusion that Blogs do not revolutionize war reporting and that the individual user must estimate the value blogs have for her or himself.

The article gives a good introduction to some of the sources available. We also get some empirical data on blogs and their reporting of specific events like the fall of Baghdad. This is valubale data and its great to see that somebody is trying to sort through all the loads of available information.

It seems somewhat difficult to call something like Reynolds’ Instapundit a diary (tagebuch) though. And, any comparison between the “MSM” and blogs should be wary of reproducing the divide that those two players set up themselves. I.e., did anybody except a few bloggers really think that blogs were going to revolutionize war reporting?

In dem Doppelband Leitmedien: Konzepte – Relevanz – Geschichte haben Anne Ulrich und ich einen Artikel zu ‘And Now Here is What Really Happened’: CNN und Warblogs als konkurrierende Deutungsistanzen im Irakkrieg 2003 veröffentlicht. Anne Ulrich erforscht die visuellen Darstellungsverfahren in der Fernsehberichterstattung zum Irakkrieg. Zusammen haben wir uns die Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede in den Kriegsdarstellungen von Fernsehen und Blogs angeschaut. Wie immer sind alle Beteilgiten darum bemüht, ihre Darstellung so authoritativ und glaubwürdig wie möglich erscheinen zu lassen.

Die zweite Veröffentlichung ist ebenfalls mit einer Kollegin zusammen geschrieben worden: Ellen Dengel-Janic und ich haben unserem mittlerweile emeritierten Professor Eckhardt Auberlen zu ehren in dem Band Drama and Cultural Change den Artikel Reimaging Shakespeare in Second Generation: A British-Aisan Perspective on Shakespeare’s King Lear geschrieben. Wir saßen schon gemeinsam bei ihm im Seminar und sind heute Kolleginnen hier inTübingen!

Especially the New York Times blog Perscriptions – Making Sense of the Health Care Debate offers a number of good resources, such as a history of health care reform, a look at several meaningful statistics, the opportunity to estimate how you will be affected and the chance to discuss all of this with other readers and ask questions.

Of course there are a bunch of other sources available: i.e. a number of health care blogs, a variety of grassroots sites and your usual array of internet weirdness (just search for “health care” on Youtube).

After reading up on the reform for one rainy weekend day, I can safely say that I still understand hardly anything but I know the key words now and definitely have an opinion (or five).

A very different way of trying to grasp a war are reports by institutions which aim at recording the events and try to get at what happened on the ground.

The UN Goldstone report released last week is an interesting example of an attempt at capturing the confusion and chaos that is war. The reactions have obviously been varied, showing that not only is it difficult to capture the different perspectives and experiences of a war as such, but that any such attempt at understanding and ordering the events is part of a politically charged field.

Whatever your judgement, take a look at this very elaborated way of writing about war for an alternative to three-minute features or 500 word postings.

Außerdem wurde die Konferenz auf Heise online besprochen und ich wurde zusammen mit den anderen Kollegen, die sich mit Neuen Medien auseinandersetzen, sogar namentlich erwähnt.

Noch mehr gefreut hätte ich mich allerdings, wenn der Inhalt meines Vortrags etwas weniger frei zusammengefasst worden wäre:

“zeigte die Amerikanistin Johanna Roering anhand von US-amerikanischen Blogs wie Sgt. Stryker’s Daily Brief, dass Blogger häufig in die Rolle von “Warrior-Citizen-Journalists” geraten, also in einer Parteinahme für die eigene Truppe oder auch deren Kombattanten enden. Das Resultat sind Newsblogs, die bestimmte Nachrichten verlinken und den Blogger zu einer Spielart des Embedded Journalist machen.”

Entweder mein Abstract oder der Vortrag waren mißverständlich oder der betreffende Journalist malt mit grobem Pinsel. Es ging in dem Vortrag darum was passiert wenn US Soldaten, klassisch zu einer unpolitischen Position in der Oeffentlichkeit bestimmt, durch Neue Medien an einem oeffentlichen Diskurs zum Beispiel ueber Krieg teilnehmen koennen.  Parteinnahme in dem oben angefuehrten Sinne war nicht Thema und Embedding habe ich gar nicht erwähnt und den WCJ schon gar nicht als eine Spielart dessen benannt.
